Villa in Ostia type B

Adalberto Libera – Villini della Società Tirrena – Villino tipo B, Ostia-Roma Italia, 1932-1934

The Type “B” villa as well as the Type A is characterized by a rectangular plan and a strictly geometric volume.
In the main elevation Libera retracts the central part thus increasing the depth of the long balconies that jut out beyond the volume with rounded corners. In the set back wall three French doors open onto the balconies illuminating the interior rooms, by contrast the side walls remain full.
The balconies feature balustrades with horizontal bands of thin metal painted white.

On the penthouse floor the main elevation empties, leaving four pillars exposed and resulting in a deep loggia that also opens onto the side elevations where there are distinctive balconies with naval-style railings. In the rear elevation, the volume of the staircase is curvilinear and exceeds the height of the main body of the building. The staircase is illuminated throughout its height by two vertical “ribbon” windows that with their perforation make explicit the interpenetration between the two bodies.
