Abbey of the Holy Trinity in Cava de’ Tirreni

Abbey of the Holy Trinity in Cava de’ Tirreni. 11th century

The abbey stands on a hill, about 400 meters above sea level, 3 km from the center from the town of Cava de’ Tirreni and a short distance from the Amalfi coast and the Nocerine countryside.
The founder of the Abbey of the Holy Trinity of Cava was St. Alferio Pappacarbone, a Salerno nobleman of Lombard origin trained in Cluny, who in 1011 withdrew under the large Arsicia cave at the foot of Mount Finestra in the present territory of the municipality of Cava de’ Tirreni, to spend a hermit life there.
