Andrea Palladio – The Basilica of the Most Holy Redentore, Venice (Italy) 1577
The Church of the Redentore is one of the masterpieces of the Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. Located in Venice, on the island of Giudecca, it was commissioned as a thanksgiving vow for the end of the plague in 1576. Its construction began in 1577 and was completed in 1592, after Palladio’s death. The church is famous for its Greek cross plan and central dome, which represent innovative and harmonious architectural solutions. Every year, in July, the Feast of the Redentore is celebrated, a traditional Venetian festival in honor of the savior from the plague.
