Ennis House

Frank Lloyd Wright – Ennis House, Los Angeles, 1923-1924

Ennis House is a secluded single family home in the Los Feliz neighborhood, Los Angeles, California, USA, south of Griffith Park. The house was designed by the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright for Charles and Mabel Ennis in 1923 and completed in 1924.
The architectural composition follows that already experimented in other Californian works by Wright, such as the Millard House called La Miniatura in Pasadena and the Storer and Freeman houses in the Hollywood hills. It is the fourth and largest structure with the use of the textile block designed by Wright in northern Los Angeles, built mainly of precast concrete blocks.
The project is inspired by ancient Mayan temples along with other buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright, such as the A. D. German Warehouse in Wisconsin and the Aline Barnsdall Hollyhock House in Hollywood. The relief decoration of its cladding blocks and the tectonic volumetry are its main features, making the Ennis House an example of the Mayan Revival architectural style.
