Landscape Formation One

Landscape Formation One is the name of a building designed by Zaha Hadid for the Landesgartenschau Grün 99 in Weil am Rhein, Baden-Württemberg. Designed in the late 90s, the building is also known as the Hadid pavilion, served as an exhibition space during the Garden Show and is home to the Trinational Environmental Center (TRUZ).
Landscape Formation One is located about two kilometers south of the center of Weils am Rhein in the so-called Dreiländerpark. The sculptural and aerodynamic building 140 meters long describes a curvature from north-east to south-west. The landscape-like shape merges with the formation of the hilly landscape and thus connects the rural area south of Weils with the city of Basel. From the southwest a flat ramp leads between the roofs of the east and west aisle. This access ramp is accessible from the north-east side by a staircase. The building occupies 845 square metres on the ground; the materials used were concrete and glass exposed on the site. Roof is partly covered with green areas, partly with gravel.

The client, Landesgartenschau Weil am Rhein GmbH, awarded the project directly to Zaha Hadid Architects without any competition. London-based architect and Hadid’s business partner Patrick Schumacher, the Mayer Bährle office and the free architect DBA in Lörrach contributed to the project.
Planning began in 1996; the construction lasted until 1999.
