The basilica of Santa Maria Novella is one of the most important churches in Florence and stands on the homonymous square.
Leon Battista Alberti, commissioned by Rucellai, planned the completion of the facade of the basilica of Santa Maria Novella, which was left unfinished in 1365 at the first order of arches, characterized by the alternation of bands of white marble and green marble, according to the centuries-old Florentine tradition. The works began around 1460. There was the problem of integrating, in a general and classic design, the new interventions with the existing elements of the previous era: at the bottom there were the avelli framed by pointed arches and the side portals, always at acute sixth, while the rose window was already open in the upper part, although bare of all decorations.
