Villa in Ostia – Type B

Adalberto libera – villa type B, Ostia-Rome Italy, 1932-1934

Small villa type B – Small villa by company of Tirrena, Adalberto libera – Ostia – Rome Italy 1932-1934

The Type ‘B’ cottage as well as the Type ‘A’ cottage is characterised by a rectangular floor plan and a strictly geometric volume.
On the main elevation, Libera withdraws the central part, thus increasing the depth of the long balconies that jut out beyond the volume with their rounded corners. In the recessed wall three French windows open onto the balconies, illuminating the interior rooms; by contrast the side walls remain full.
The balconies are characterised by balustrades with horizontal bands of thin metal painted white.

On the penthouse floor, the main elevation empties, leaving four pillars exposed and resulting in a deep loggia that also opens onto the side elevations where there are characteristic balconies with naval-style railings.

On the rear façade, the volume of the staircase is curved and exceeds the height of the main body of the building. The staircase is lit for its entire height by two vertical ‘ribbon’ windows that with their perforation make explicit the interpenetration between the two bodies.
