Erosion defense – Live flap

1:100 Scale dwg file (meters)

The “live flap” is made up of alternating layers of live fagots, arranged longitudinally to the bank, and live branches of willows, arranged transversely, above the average water level.
In order to reconstitute an eroded bank, this module must be repeated until the erosion is filled and the desired height is reached. It is completed on the back of the bundles with filling of inert material.
Dead material occurs below the average water level. The bundles are fixed with wooden and iron stakes, arranged in alternating orientation.

This technique is used in bank restoration in medium-energy watercourses when the stability of the bank cannot be improved by decreasing its slope. The “live flap” is immediately effective as the branches provide mechanical protection and slow down the water, reducing its erosive capacity; over time the protective capacity increases thanks to the rooting of the willow rods.
