Steel jacketing detail 02

1:100 Scale dwg file (meters)

Reinforcing reinforced concrete (RC) columns with steel angles and steel jackets, known as “steel jacketing,” is a technique used to improve the resistance and deformation capacity of existing buildings. This technique is particularly useful in situations where existing buildings lack adequate seismic detailing or are in critical condition with respect to vertical loads.

The components of the strengthening system are steel angles, placed at the corners of the concrete columns to form a sort of cage, and steel jackets that connect the angles to each other, usually arranged horizontally, at regular intervals along the height of the column.

Design considerations: a careful study of the existing structure and the loads to which it will be subjected is necessary to determine the size and arrangement of the angles and jackets.
