New cycle and pedestrian bridge over the Reno (2009)

Designed by engineers Francesco Losacco, Massimo Majowiecki and Andrea Papetti

On 19 April 2009, the new cycle-pedestrian bridge over the Reno was inaugurated, connecting the former Filanda (Croce) to the Tripoli/Garibaldi area.
In the same place, until the 1940s, the boatman Aldo Mandini ferried people from one
to the other side of the Reno river.
The new bridge, designed by engineers Francesco Losacco, Massimo Majowiecki and Andrea Papetti, and built by Manutencoop Immobiliare, features a 35-metre flagpole reminiscent of a fishing rod and represents an element of continuity with the A-shaped portals of the Ponte della Pace bridge near the City Hall.
The structure of the footbridge is entirely made of metal, for a total weight of about 180 tonnes, the length of the main span is about 75 metres. The total value of the intervention is approximately 1.4 million euro.

"The use of the reinforced concrete slab in the deck, instead of a more common orthotropic slab, stems from the intention to significantly improve the performance of the structure in terms of stiffness against vibrations induced by pedestrian operation. For this reason, a type of rigid connection with metal rungs between the slab and the steel caisson was planned.

Passerella strallata a Casalecchio sul Reno

Engineer Andrea Papetti (for the design team)
"In tackling the design of the cycle-pedestrian footbridge, we faced the problem of combining the purely structural-constructive aspect of the work with the objective of inserting it with minimum impact in the natural environment, also giving, as requested by the Municipal Administration, aesthetic continuity to the architectural typology of the footbridge, already existing since February 2004, in the area in front of the new Casalecchio Town Hall, which has blended well into the surrounding context; all this in compliance with the hydraulic constraints provided. The chosen design profile, an asymmetrical single-tower cable-stayed bridge with a double "Y" shaped mouth, is an architectural sign that is both strong and light. It allows an easy landing even in emergency situations and at the same time ensures suitable conditions for the enjoyment of the park and the transit of maintenance vehicles both for the watercourse, the green areas and the public facilities".
