Palazzo Bonaccorso
Municipality of Bologna Headquarters
Palazzo Bonaccorso is a building in Bologna, home to the municipal offices. It is the second seat of the Municipality, compared to the historical one of Palazzo d'Accursio.
The Municipal Council of Bologna has commissioned the construction of a building covering an area of 33,000 square meters intended to house the 1,000 employees of the Municipality, previously distributed in 21 different places in the city, at a single location. The building is located behind the railway station, where there was a fruit and vegetable market.
The project is intended to redevelop the area and rejoin it to the city center. The design concept is articulated on the fractionation of a single mass into three blocks intended for various activities. The blocks of different heights are joined by a shaded canopy, an entrance hall developed on four floors and a degrading public space.
The canopy has the dual function of protecting from solar radiation and giving a sense of architectural cohesion to the complex. The large single canopy, which constitutes the most characteristic element of the design, folds up like a gigantic "origami" laid on the various buildings and overlooking a panoramic terrace.
The building was built between 2006 and 2008.
