The pond and the Temple of Aesculapius
The architectures of Villa Borghese
The Pond and the Temple of Aesculapius are two distinctive features located within the Villa Borghese park in Rome. Villa Borghese is a large public park stretching over some 80 hectares in the centre of the city and is one of the most popular leisure venues for residents and tourists.
The Pond
This is an artificial body of water located in the north-eastern part of the park. It is surrounded by a scenic promenade, allowing people to stroll along the banks and enjoy the view of the water. Small rowing boats can be hired at the pond for a short trip on the water. This space is ideal for a relaxing break and offers a serene environment away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The Temple of Aesculapius
This temple is a neoclassical structure located on an artificial island in the middle of the Pond. Aesculapius is the Roman god of medicine and healing, equivalent to the Greek god Asclepius. The temple is dedicated to him and was designed by architect Antonio Asprucci in the 18th century. It features a large colonnade and a statue of the god Aesculapius holding a snake, a symbol associated with medicine.
Both the Pond and the Temple of Aesculapius contribute to the peaceful and evocative atmosphere within the Villa Borghese park. The park itself is a popular destination for nature lovers, for those who want to take a walk, go jogging or simply relax outdoors. Besides these elements, Villa Borghese is also home to some of Rome's main cultural attractions, including museums, art galleries and theatres.
