Salaborsa Library

An important cultural landmark for Bologna

Bologna's Salaborsa Library is one of the city's main cultural centres, located in the heart of the historical centre, next to Piazza Maggiore. Its history, architectural features and functions make it a fascinating place of great importance.

The library is housed in a building that was originally used for trading and market operations by the Bologna Stock Exchange. Its construction dates back to the 19th century (started in 1885 and opened in 1888). The stock exchange hall was converted into a library in 2001, with a redevelopment project that preserved and enhanced the historical architecture, integrating modern technologies and spaces for reading and study.

The architecture of the Salaborsa Library combines historical and contemporary elements. Its main features include:

The central atrium: a large open space dominated by a large glass dome that illuminates the area below;
Glass flooring: under the transparent floor, archaeological remains of Roman Bologna can be seen, bearing witness to the city's long history.
The use of modern materials: the use of wood and metal creates a contrast with the historical structures, giving the entire room a contemporary look.
Reading and study areas: arranged to encourage concentration and silence, with large windows offering views of the centre of Bologna.

The Sala Borsa Library is not only a place to borrow books, but also fulfils several functions:

Access to multimedia resources: in addition to books, it offers access to magazines, online databases and digital resources.
Cultural activities: it organises events, workshops, presentations and meetings with authors, promoting culture and reading.
Spaces for students and researchers: provides dedicated areas for individual and group study, as well as rooms for conferences and meetings.
Community services: offers support and services for different age groups and groups, such as digital literacy courses and activities for children.

The Sala Borsa Library thus represents an important cultural reference point for Bologna, combining history and innovation in a welcoming and stimulating environment.
