The exponential growth in the use of BIM in public tenders
There has been incredible growth in the use of BIM in public tenders. Since 2017, in fact, the growth has never stopped. In fact, the numbers literally make your head spin.
To understand the magnitude of the change we have witnessed in recent years, one only has to think of the 263.9% increase in BIM tenders in 2018 compared to the previous year and the 58.3% increase in 2019. Speaking of numbers, as many as 478 BIM calls for public tenders were concluded in 2019.
The data was provided by the OICE report, which contains other very interesting insights. Going back to 2019, in fact, we can see that BIM tenders are 8% of the total number of tenders issued in Italy. The value of these is € 296.3 million, compared to € 1,502 million for the entire engineering and architecture services market.
It is in the average value that BIM tenders catch the eye. In fact, each one has an average value of € 620,000, 145% more than the average of the rest of the services listed above, which stands at € 252,934.
The increase is due, above all, to the growth in calls for tenders above the European threshold of € 221,000 (which has fallen to € 214,000 since 2020). More than half of the total (56.1%, which includes 92.6% of the value of all calls for tenders) is well above this threshold. In fact, tenders of less than €100,000 account for just 21.5% with 1.9% of the value, while those between €100,000 and €221,000 collect the remaining 22.4% and 5.5% of the total value.
Among the entities involved in launching calls for tenders (as in previous years), it was the Agenzia del Demanio that was the most active. In fact, the agency promoted 142 public calls, with as many as 25 in December 2019 alone.
BIM notices were issued throughout Italy in a fairly homogeneous manner. In the southern part of the peninsula, there were 128 calls for tenders (26.8% of the total), on the islands 61 (12.8%), the centre 121 (25.3%). In the northern part of Italy there was less use of BIM in public tenders. In the north-east there were 94 tenders (19.7%), while in the north-west 74 (15.5%).
The picture we are offered is that, in the near future, there will be more and more BIM public tenders.
